Have we lost our sense of decency in our
quest for materialism?
Have we totally lost our sense of humanity...
our feeling of empathy...
or sympathy...in that matter....
Are we less human now
that we are constantly
haunted by the need to excel...
to be better than others...
Kiasu lang....as the hokien ppl would say...
Why do i say this?
Yesterday while having dinner at
this Nyonya place in Terminal 2 Seremban,
Chin took the China Press
(the Chinese newspaper)
to read while waiting for the food...
Right smack in the middle of the front page
are pictures of a man being mauled by
the white tiger in the Singapore Zoo.
The pictures were very detailed
as the whole frame by frame
sequence of events were published
with the gory details being describe
in explicit details...
Well...i do not read Chinese
characters but i'll be damned if i do not understand what's
happening...
Now the question is..
how would the family members feel
looking at those pictures?
How would the poor man's mother and father
feel looking at the frame by frame
pictures of the son being
eaten alive by a tiger...
how he suffered...and how he lay there helpless at the
mercy of the beast...
Are we so blinded by our needs to
pursue material worth that we have pushed aside all
sense of decency?
It makes me wonder...
I wouldn't want to see my love ones die
such a horrible death...
suffice to know that he or she dies
of such and such...
the words are painful enough to accept...
let alone the graphic details of it...
This does not mean that i am not
facing the facts but
there are certain things that
require us to be discreet...
especially something as painful as death....
In doing so...
i believe the newspaper
has taught the public to be less human...
to be insensitive object...
one that condones to what the media is doing...
instilling a "doesn't- care-much-because- it's-not-someone-i-know" attitude...
I believe that as one human race in this world
we should respect others' feelings
and that there are things that should be restraint
from the public's eyes...
This also applies to certain explicit words
to describe sexual acts
that i believe innocent children should not be
exposed to...
What would you say if your 6 year-old
daughter asks you...
"Mummy, what's the meaning of sodomy?"
What are you going to say when
you haven't even explain to her
about the bird and the bees?
It is an issue to ponder...
