Tessa and I attended ICELT 2009 in Malacca
for 2 days...
It was an eye and mind opening experience which
i enjoyed tremendously...
tho there were some glitches when some
presenter did not turn up for their session.
We met with our ex-coursemates -
Dz, Florence and Yasmin..
Dz of course would be there since she is part of the
organiser...
Yasmin, Tess, Mizza, Florence
But it felt good to be together again and catching
up on all the the years of not meeting each other...
And to make it more significant - this is the
10th year o our graduation...
so this little reunion is happening 10 years after
we had graduated from uni...
5 of us during lunch
There were some really interesting sessions that we attended...
one that really got the crowd participating
and learn something new...
Among the most interesting that i like
were Carolyn Graham with Jazz Chanst and Creativity in the
Classroom,
Annie Hughes with Telling Story,
and Malachi Edwin's finding or rather commentary on
the Literature Component 1st and 2nd cycle..
Hightlights:
Jazz Chants by Carolyn Graham
She is an amazing lady...
energetic and full of life....
she is a musician as well as a teacher...
she used to play jazz music in a jazz club while teaching in NY..
and that's how she discovered Jazz Chants...
Her workshop taught teachers how to come up with jazz chants
and also how to count the beat...
and she also demonstrated the chanting and
involved all the participants...
so that we can get the ideas and the feel for
jazz chants...
She had 2 sessions...
another one is creativity in the classroom...
now...this time she still dealt with jazz chants
but more to how to incorporate
jazz chants with jazz music...
teachers can simply download or buy jazz music cds
and use them in the classroom...
so for those who cannot play the keyboard
well..there is the option of using the cds...
a thumb up for carolyn graham...
Story Telling by Annie Hughes
This is also an interesting session for teachers.
she showed how teachers can use story telling in the classroom
to teach...
and she demonstrated how it is done...
her movement and gestures were
really vivid that one can imagine the story
that she told....
Reader's Theatre by Dr Sujatha
This is also an interesting slot done by a lecturer in Uitm...
she got her students to do the RT
so we get the idea of how it is done...
(tho i had attended one afew years back)
but it is still refreshing to see...
she gave some websites on where teachers can source for
simple to difficult scripts...
Other interesting slots include Blogging as an educational tool and
Christopher Allen's session on his finding of culture and
its influence in the teaching and learning styles.
Too bad we couldnt attend Jaya's session because
it was at the same time with Edwin's.
But overall....this is a refreshing conference to attend
if one intends to develop
one's teaching skills...
the experience gained worth more than the money paid..
On the last day before leaving Equatorial...
