Today is relly not a good day for me....
i am EXTREMELY frustrated bcos a fool made some
stoopid and untactful comment dat caused my blood to boil...
Finally...the coordinator came today....
he didn't offer an apology for not turning up twice without excuse...
I was businesslike with him...
no chitchatting and small talk...
i was annoyed okay...
He made my blood boil....
First....he said dramatisation is not accepted...
Why - because students will have to concentrate on acting and
talking at the same time and this will distract them...
so PREFERABLY do not do dramatisation but can do role play...
ME: You are limiting the creativity of the student...
Students should be allowed to choose their own ways of presenting
and issue according to their creativity...
Second...marks are not awarded for students who merely representing
schools in Public speaking or any other contests
involving speech...
to reward them, they are EXEMPTED from 1 assessment.
Why - bcos they are TOO good for school level
But we can give marks if they represent district to state
Contradiction: if they present during assembly...it is accepted..
ME: we guided students every step of the way...and we always...always...
ask the student to either present infront of their
class or in assembly so that they can have the
confidence and courage to speak in front of audience
So...why can't they be given marks?
Third....Construct 1 - students from weak classes who memorise
script mostly without fully understanding it
and does not perform the ability to give effective elaborations or gists
to substantiate their points can be awarded 5 marks.
Why - bcos they perform the function and seemed like fluent
when presenting.
ME: Unacceptable because students must give effective arguments
and fully elaborate a point to show that they understand the issue
at hand and not merely parroting away...
Implication: students will show the cert in their interviews for jobs
and in the cert it is stated good in speaking English
but when asked simple questions unable to answer...
so school's image will be tarnished bcos Eng tcr simply award marks.
Teachers' standard of English is really low if students who
deserve 3 or 2 are given 4 or 5 marks
Fouth- 4 marks for vocab and grammar when students' script do
not show any really effective vocabulary or at least some
expressions.
Script also does not show ability to use a variety of sentence structure.
Structure mainly in simple sentences level.
ME: good students should at least perform the ability to use
Compound sentences if not complex sentences because
it is stated so in the criteria for grading.
Fifth - fluency - 4 marks when students parrot away in a monotonous
style and expressionless too.
ME: students should at least use correct word stress, intonation
and rhythm when speaking the language.
They do not have to use the queen's accent but stress,
intonation and rhythm.
They might pronounced correctly but that is not the only aspect of
fluency.
Problem arises: If the students who deserve maximum marks 3
are awarded 4 and 5 to his standard,
how about those students who are able to converse, joke and argue
effectively without any script prepared and able
to use interesting expressions in their natural
conversation?
What marks should we give them?
Is it fair for them when they prepare
the whole thing themselves and not merely lifting from some
reference books?
His ATTITUDE sucks BIGTIME:
1. He suggested that i have no experienced in assessing ULBS.
2. For suggesting that i am too strict in giving marks
3. For suggesting that Kak Ti has no experienced in
assessing ULBS
4 For having the decency to suggest that Kak Ti and I
become KPKW so that we will be exposed to the marking
and assessing of ULBS
5. For not apologising and offering any explanation AT ALL
when he didn't turn up as promised twice
6. And when i MENTIONED my feeling about this, he merely
ignored it and did not say anything at all
My conclusion of the whole thingy:
1. His level of English is pretty low if that is what he is giving to
his school students.
2. He doesn't give a damn about maintaining a good
standard of English...
one that can become an acceptable benchmark to proper
spoken English.
3. It is no wonder that the English of the younger generation
nowadays is deteriorating bcos of teachers like
him who simply accept a SATIFACTORY performance
as GOOD or or higher band of GOOD.
4. He does not know the difference between GOOD and SATIFACTORY
maybe bcos he never taught GOOD to EXCELLENT
students before in his years of teaching.
Well...i lost my respect of him...
and his credibility...
and if he is a representative to 3 quarter of the English
teachers who are chosen to carry out the lembaga
peperiksaan duty in N9...it simply means
these teachers are actually syok sendiri...
and are not as good as they themselves think.
Still Sarawak is the BEST state evah...
Most of the English teachers i met during courses
or involved in lembaga's duty have good command of the
written and spoken English...
Now my question is....
If the English teachers themselves think that they are VERY GOOD in
English and do not bother to constantly improve
their command of the language through
reading and writing...
what will happen to the students that they teach?
Now...do you understand why the English standard is deteriorating?
It is a point to ponder.......
